Lawn Fertilizer Schedule by Grass Type

There is no such thing as a lawn fertilizer schedule. There are five or six of them, they disagree with each other, and the one that grows a beautiful tall fescue lawn will slowly kill a centipede lawn.

Two variables decide everything: which grass you have and where you live. Get either wrong and a well-intentioned bag of nitrogen becomes a disease problem, a scalping problem, or — in centipede's case — a dead lawn. If you're not certain which grass you have, start with what grass do I have.

How to read a nitrogen rate

Every number in this article is pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet — not pounds of fertilizer. A 50 lb bag of 24-0-11 contains 12 lb of actual N, so it covers 12,000 sq ft at 1 lb N per 1,000.

The arithmetic: bag weight × (first number ÷ 100) = pounds of N in the bag. Divide that by your target rate to get the square footage it covers.

One more distinction that changes timing more than any other: water-soluble (quick-release) nitrogen feeds for a few weeks and must be repeated; controlled-release nitrogen — look for WIN, water-insoluble nitrogen, on the guaranteed analysis — meters out over months and lets one application do the work of three.

Tall fescue (cool-season): fall is the whole program

Tall fescue's growth curve peaks in fall, and fertilizer works best when it follows the plant instead of fighting it. Fall nitrogen builds roots and density going into winter; spring nitrogen builds leaf tissue that has to survive summer.

The fall program, two equivalent ways to run it in the transition zone (Virginia and North Carolina piedmont):

Spring: only if the lawn actually needs it, and capped at 0.5 lb N per 1,000 sq ft by April 15 in the central piedmont. Later and heavier is where the trouble starts.

Summer: don't. High nitrogen in late spring and summer is a documented driver of brown patch in tall fescue. NC State's own work found that 0.5 lb N per 1,000 sq ft or less applied in late spring and summer does not increase brown patch severity — so if you fertilize at all in that window, stay at or under that rate. Above it, you are buying disease.

Annual total: 2–4 lb N per 1,000 sq ft per year in the piedmont. Tiller's own tall-fescue target treats 3.0 lb/yr as the top of the comfortable range and flags anything above 4.0 lb/yr as excessive — which lines up with extension guidance, with the app sitting slightly conservative. St. Augustine (warm-season): the numbers move with the region

St. Augustine is the clearest example of why a single national schedule is useless. The published rate in Texas and the published rate in coastal Virginia are not the same number, and blending them into an average serves nobody.

Rules that go with those totals:

Virginia and the coastal transition zone: St. Augustine caps at 4 lb N per 1,000 sq ft per year total, and nitrogen stops by mid-August — earlier than the Texas 6-weeks-before-frost rule would suggest, because winterkill, not frost date, is the binding constraint that far north.

Tiller's St. Augustine default treats 2.5 lb/yr as the top of the comfortable range and 4.0 lb/yr as the warning line. That's a deliberately conservative baseline, not a ceiling on what's agronomically normal: high-management St. Augustine in south Florida and south Texas routinely runs at or above the top of that range. If you're in the Deep South running a high-input lawn, treat the app number as a starting point to adjust upward with local extension guidance, not a rule you're violating.

Bermuda: a fall program that does not travel

In the transition zone, bermuda gets a fall taper that helps it survive winter (Virginia Tech): 1 lb of water-soluble N per 1,000 sq ft in September, then 0.25–0.5 lb every 4–6 weeks until frost, with a growing-season cap of 4 lb per 1,000 sq ft per year.

Do not carry that program south. Clemson's warm-season calendars close all nitrogen before August 15 in the South Carolina Upstate and before September 1 on the South Carolina coast, and forbid nitrogen entirely from September through December. Late nitrogen there pushes tender growth into spring dead spot and large patch pressure instead of buying winter hardiness.

Stated plainly: in the Carolinas and further south, stop bermuda nitrogen well before fall — don't apply the Virginia fall-taper program there.

Zoysia: the range doubles below the transition zone

Transition zone (Virginia Tech): 1–2 lb N per 1,000 sq ft per year. That's the cap, and zoysia is genuinely happy at the low end.

Deep South (Alabama, Louisiana, and Clemson's species calendar): 2–4 lb N per 1,000 sq ft per year is the working consensus, reflecting a longer growing season and more leaching.

Tiller's zoysia default is 2.0 lb/yr comfortable, 3.0 lb/yr warning — correct for the transition zone, conservative for the Gulf states.

Zoysia's real failure mode isn't underfeeding, it's thatch. Pushing it with nitrogen on top of its naturally dense growth habit builds a thatch layer you'll be renting a machine to remove. Underfed zoysia looks slightly thin; overfed zoysia looks great for two years and then needs work.

Centipede: the number is a ceiling, not a target

Centipede is the one grass where more fertilizer is a straightforwardly bad idea, and the extension services do not hedge about it.

1–2 lb N per 1,000 sq ft per year, and Clemson, Alabama, and Louisiana all agree that's an upper bound rather than a goal. Louisiana states it outright: exceeding 2 lb per 1,000 sq ft per year "can result in decline or death of the grass." Never exceed 1 lb N per 1,000 sq ft in a single application.

Tiller's centipede default is 1.5 lb/yr comfortable, 2.0 lb/yr warning — this is the one species where the app's numbers and extension guidance line up almost exactly, because the agronomic ceiling here is a hard one.

"Centipede decline" — thinning, yellowing, patches that don't recover in spring — is frequently a symptom of a lawn that was fertilized like bermuda. Iron for color and a soil test for pH will do more for a centipede lawn than another bag of nitrogen. See soil test basics.

Before you spread anything: soil test

Every rate above is nitrogen only, because nitrogen is the one nutrient a lawn reliably needs annually and the one that isn't safe to guess at. Phosphorus and potassium are a different problem — many established lawns need no phosphorus at all, and several states restrict it by law.

Frequently asked questions

What's the fertilizer schedule for tall fescue? Fall-weighted: either 0.5–1 lb of water-soluble N per 1,000 sq ft every 4–6 weeks from September to November, or a single early-to-mid-September controlled-release application at 1.5–2 lb N per 1,000 sq ft using a product that's at least 50% WIN. Spring only if needed, capped at 0.5 lb N by April 15 in the central piedmont. Annual total 2–4 lb N per 1,000 sq ft.

How often should I fertilize St. Augustine grass? In Texas, space applications 45–60 days apart, never exceeding 1 lb N per 1,000 sq ft per application (0.5 lb is safer in heat), for an annual total of 2–4 lb in full sun or 1–2 lb in shade. Start after the second or third mowing following green-up and stop 6 weeks before your local first fall frost.

How much nitrogen does centipede grass need? 1–2 lb N per 1,000 sq ft per year, treated as a ceiling rather than a target, and never more than 1 lb in a single application. Louisiana extension warns that exceeding 2 lb per year can result in decline or death of the grass.

Can I use the same fertilizer schedule for bermuda in South Carolina as in Virginia? No. Virginia's bermuda program includes a fall nitrogen taper through frost, while Clemson closes all warm-season nitrogen before August 15 in the Upstate and September 1 on the coast, and forbids nitrogen September through December. Use your own state's calendar.

Why do different sources give different nitrogen rates for the same grass? Because they're written for different climates. Growing-season length, leaching rates, and winterkill risk all change the right answer, so a rate published for south Texas is genuinely wrong for coastal Virginia and vice versa. Use the figure published closest to where you live.
