Watering by Grass Type: Where the Species Actually Differ
The generic watering baseline — roughly an inch a week, delivered deep and infrequently, measured with cans rather than guessed — is the same for every lawn, and it's covered in full in how much water does a lawn actually need. Start there if you haven't calibrated your sprinklers; none of what follows works without knowing your output in inches per hour.
This article is only about the deltas. Where does your specific grass depart from that baseline, and where does following the generic rule actively hurt it? There are a few places, and one of them is a direct contradiction between two grasses people routinely plant in the same seed bag.

The big one: tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass want opposite things
If you take one thing from this page, take this. These two cool-season grasses handle summer drought in opposite ways, and the standard advice for one is counterproductive for the other.
Tall fescue has the deepest root system of the cool-season grasses and good drought avoidance — but it has a limit. Tall fescue can be lost if drought exceeds roughly three weeks without water. That's a real ceiling, not a comfort threshold. If you're running a fescue lawn dry through a hot summer, irrigate before you reach three weeks, even if the lawn already looks brown. A modest amount of water inside that window is the difference between a dormant lawn and a dead one.
Kentucky bluegrass goes the other way. It tolerates two to four weeks of summer drought with no supplemental water at all, and — this is the part that surprises people — watering it through a summer drought raises disease risk more than it helps. Bluegrass dormancy is a working strategy, and interrupting it with irrigation keeps the canopy wet during the exact conditions that favor summer patch and other diseases.
So: water fescue before three weeks; leave bluegrass alone. In a mixed fescue/bluegrass lawn, manage for the fescue — it has the harder deadline — and accept that the bluegrass component will look worse than it needs to.

St. Augustine: the number depends on which St. Augustine
St. Augustine is grown across a huge climate range, and its watering guidance diverges by region just as sharply as its fertilizer rates do. Don't take a Texas number to Virginia or vice versa.
Texas (Texas A&M AgriLife EHT-144): one to two waterings per week in the warm months, deep and infrequent, wetting the root zone to 6–8 inches.
The practical constraint in most Texas cities isn't agronomy — it's the ordinance. Municipal watering restrictions frequently govern frequency more tightly than the grass does, with assigned days and hours. Check your city's current stage before committing to any schedule; a two-day-per-week restriction makes "one to two waterings a week, deep" the plan whether or not the grass agrees.
Transition zone (Virginia and coastal, Virginia Tech): the generic baseline applies unchanged — about an inch per week, delivered as 0.5 inch every three to four days.
A general caution rather than a number: St. Augustine's published management figures — watering and mowing height — diverge sharply by region. Any source that gives you one national St. Augustine number for anything is oversimplifying. Use the guidance published closest to where you live.
Bermuda in Texas: ceilings, not targets
Texas A&M publishes weekly bermuda figures with an unusual and useful framing — these are maximums to water below, not targets to hit:

That framing matters. Over-watered bermuda is a real problem — shallow roots, more disease, more thatch, more weeds — and hitting the ceiling every week because it's printed on a page is a way to get there.
Unirrigated, dormant bermuda through a severe drought is a legitimate management choice, not a failure. Bermuda is exceptionally good at going brown and coming back. If you're in a restriction stage or simply don't want to spend the water, letting it go dormant is a defensible plan — just commit to it rather than alternating between watering and not. Zoysia: no number, and that's the honest answer
You will find weekly inch figures for zoysia online. We could not find one in any extension source checked, so this article doesn't publish one.
What is well supported: zoysia is very drought resistant and rarely needs supplemental irrigation once established. That's the whole guidance. Run the baseline if the lawn is showing moisture stress — bluish-gray cast, footprints that stay visible, folded blades — and otherwise let it be.
An establishing zoysia lawn is a different situation entirely and does need regular water; "once established" is doing real work in that sentence.

What doesn't change by species
Everything mechanical. Water in the morning. Wet the root zone deeply and let the surface dry between cycles. Cycle and soak on clay — few lawns on clay absorb more than half an inch per hour, so run until runoff is about to start, wait 30 minutes, and resume. Subtract rainfall. Re-set your controller monthly through the growing season.
