Two things fall out of that table that explain most cool-season lawn frustration.
Roots quit before shoots do. Root growth stops at 77 °F while the leaves keep going to 90. Through a hot summer, a cool-season lawn is spending stored resources on top growth with no root system being built underneath. Roots keep working long after mowing stops. Root growth continues down to 33 °F. A lawn that hasn't needed mowing since early November is still actively rooting — which is exactly why fall is the build season and why late fall applications aren't wasted.
Warm-season grasses: a much higher comfort band
Bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine, and centipede want heat that would stall a fescue lawn outright:
- Optimum shoot growth: 80–95 °F.
- Optimum root growth: 75–85 °F.
- Root growth slows below about 50 °F soil temperature.

There's a specific spring failure that catches people every year. At around 64 °F, after a cold winter followed by a rapid spring warm-up, a warm-season lawn's old roots can brown and die within one to two days while the new root system is still forming. The lawn greens up on top and then looks stressed, thin, or wilty for a couple of weeks with no obvious cause.

Most "your grass goes dormant at X degrees" claims online trace back to somewhere unhelpful. This one doesn't, and it's the one that changes what you do:

Read the qualifiers, because all three are load-bearing. 4-inch depth, not surface. Constantly, not one warm afternoon. And rising, not a reading taken on the back side of a warm spell.
Fertilizing a warm-season lawn before that point is the classic spring mistake: the turf isn't growing fast enough to use the nitrogen, so cool-season weeds and Poa annua take it instead, and you've paid to fertilize your weeds. Waiting two weeks costs nothing.

Dormancy is normal. Winterkill is not, and it has its own numbers:
- Cool-season grass: at risk on a rapid drop below 20 °F.
- Warm-season grass: at risk below 25 °F.
The word doing the work is rapid. Grass that has hardened off gradually through a normal fall tolerates cold that would kill the same lawn during a sudden December swing after a warm November. Snow cover is protective, not harmful; bare, frozen, wind-exposed turf is the higher-risk situation.

- Clear leaves. Dormant grass under a wet mat is a spring problem.
- Minimize traffic on dormant turf, which can't repair itself.
Coming out of dormancy (spring):
